The story behind the name
"Gein" comes out of memory and passion: the name is the affectionate Ligurian-dialect nickname of Angelo Guido ("Angein"), father of Giuseppe, the Loano diver whose iconic helmet is our restaurant's emblem today. Opened by Alessandro Guido in tribute to his family roots, the room is run now with the same dedication by his son Simone Guido, who carries on a tradition made of memory, the sea and good cooking.
Giuseppe Guido, father of Alessandro and grandfather of Simone, was born in Loano to an old local family and took the nickname Gein — short for Angein, angel in Ligurian.
At seventeen he began working underwater: off South Africa, Greece and Great Britain, mostly recovering iron and copper from the wrecks of the Normandy landings. He was part of the crew of the Artiglio.
He went on working as a diver in Loano alongside his son Alessandro for some thirty years.
Alessandro named the restaurant Gein in honour of his father and his family.
